WELCOME TO DURBAN NORTH.

Durban North is situated just north of Durban in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, created in 2000, which includes the greater Durban area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It lies between the N2 freeway and the eastern seashore, with the Umgeni River forming its southern boundary. It is flanked by La Lucia in the north.

Schools
Local schools include Glenashley Preparatory, Chelsea Preparatory School, Danville Park Girls' High School, Durban North College,Northwood School, a boys high school, Northlands Primary School, Northlands Girls' High School, Our Lady of Fatima Convent School and Oakridge College. These are arguably some the best schools in Durban, and they boast the latest sporting facilities, with Northwood having a stunning Astro Turf field. These grounds are often used by the Springboks or visiting teams like the Blues and the All Blacks for practicing during the Super 15 Rugby competitions.
 Durban North College started as a purely Afrikaans school called Afrikaans Hoër Durban Noord. In 1996, due to government policy in diversifying previously Afrikaans-only schools, the school changed its name to Durban North College and adopted a dual-medium language policy, offering all subjects in both English and Afrikaans.

Sports clubs
 - Regent Harriers, a popular running club founded in 1960.
 - Durban North Hockey Club, an amalgamation of the Glenwood Old Boys and Crusaders Hockey clubs.
 - Durban Wings Club, A Club for Members interested in flying and associated interests.

Durban North is home to the beautiful Beechwood Golf Club, affiliated to Durban Country Club. There is a big modern Virgin Active 5 minutes away in the La Lucia Mall, where the Saul Harris Tennis Coaching club can also be found.

Recreation;
Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is a 76-hectare reserve with the largest population of mangrove trees in the Durban area. The area is used as a nature conservation education centre. The black mangrove, the red mangrove, and the white mangrove may be seen. On the shoreline, there are sand dunes where creeping plants and pioneer scrub are to be found. There is some birdlife, including the mangrove kingfisher, curlew and water dike. The Natal nightjar may sometimes be heard. With the help of The Rotary Club of Durban Umgeni, a boardwalk has been built over the channels to gain access. You can also expect to encounter the strange mudskippers - fish that use their pectoral fins to either skim over the water or to propel them across the mud. There are also thousands of fiddler crabs with their single large claw and an assortment of mollusks. There are three trails in the reserve, taking the visitors to the bird hide and to the swamp, where waders come to feed. The Beachwood Mangroves Reserve is only open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 08h00 until sunset. The reserve is just off Riverside Road in Durban North.

The Virginia Bush on the border of Glenashley and Durban North is a beautiful indigenous greenbelt where guided walks are done most Sundays, and it’s also open to the public during the week.

On the Umgeni Park River is the Umgeni Bird Park which is a big tourist attraction, and is very popular with the locals, as there are regular bird shows and a lovely tea garden in idyllic surroundings.

General
Durban North is a very close knit community, and because of the proximity of all the schools, there is a fun loving competitive spirit amongst the children and the parents. The houses are a variety of solid old Durban North character homes with classic high ceilings and beautiful Oregon floors, and the more modern houses that have been built by those renovating the old style homes. Kensington Square in central Durban North is a hive of activity with major restaurants and a Super Spar, all offering safe secure parking. All the major banks are within this shopping area, and within walking distance to all the schools.
