Westville, Durban

Westville. Village west of Durban? Although it fits that description rather conveniently, Westville began life as a farming community, which ultimately became Westville (in honour of Martin West, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Natal.)
Living close to work has moved from being a luxury to a necessity. This makes Westville increasingly attractive, both because of its easy access to key arterial routes, and also because a growing number of businesses have relocated to regional business parks, such as Westway, alongside The Pavilion, and Derby Downs, alongside the Westwood Shopping Mall. Westville has become a significant business Centre.
Schools:
For many young families, schooling will be a prime motivation for choosing Westville. Westville’s numerous public schools maintain excellent reputations. There are numerous pre-primary and primary schools in the area. Both Westville Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools are prestigious and boast illustrious past & present scholars and sportspersons.
Education doesn’t stop at schools. What was once the Durban-Westville University campus is now part of the University of KZN; Vega, the Brand Communications School, is found at Derby Downs;Â Varsity College – which is affiliated to the Westville Country Club and shares all their amenities – and the International Hotel School in the Westville Hotel, all contribute to the well-rounded tertiary offerings of Westville.
Recreation:
Westville has two nature reserves: Palmiet & Roosfontein, plus numerous areas protected & set aside for nature. The Palmiet River, which winds through Westville, is at the heart of the Palmiet Nature Reserve, which has field ranges on duty seven days a week. There are braai facilities for the families to enjoy. Â
Westville also has very active sporting facilities, available at Jimmy Bellows Sports Ground & Chiltern Football Club, as well as Westville & Chiltern Athletics clubs. A wonderful public pool is available with rolling lawns, a “baby” pool as well as an Olympic size pool. Two of our local shopping centers also boast gyms.
For the more laid-back individual, there are numerous pubs & restaurants as well as a full range of movie theatres at the Pavilion.
General:
Westville has a strong sense of family & community….. if you buy into Westville, you become a part of it.
But chat to the majority of Westville families, and they wouldn’t live anywhere else. We have it all: From a top-notch hospital, superb and varied shopping, social and sporting facilities, lush protected parks, easy access to anywhere, and a range of – arguably – the finest schools in the province.
