Woodhaven, Durban
Woodhaven is the newest suburb in the southern Durban districts of Montclair, Yellowwood Park, and Woodlands. Developed in the early 1970s by the mining group Goldfields of South Africa, Woodhaven was built on land purchased from the Durban City Council with plans to construct and sell approximately 575 housing units.
As one of the pioneers of higher density development in South Africa, Woodhaven set the stage and guidelines for many similar projects. The first 3-bedroom, 90 square meter units were sold for R12,000. Due to high demand, later developments included larger and more refined 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom homes to cater to more discerning buyers.
The area primarily consists of houses and duplexes. In the last decade, three new blocks have been developed, including two large blocks of flats with over 200 units each and one block of free-standing simplexes. These developments were designed to accommodate people moving from townships to previously "white" areas.
To cater to the growing population, a pre-primary school and a church were established, both of which are still in operation today. Primary and high schools for Woodhaven residents are located in the neighbouring areas of Yellowwood Park, Montclair, and Woodlands.
Woodhaven has a reliable transport system, with municipal buses running from Durban CBD to most outlying suburbs, including Woodhaven. Additionally, mini-bus taxis operate throughout the day to and from various destinations in and around Durban. The one-way bridge which was lost during the floods of April 2022 is under construction and hoping to be ready November 2024.
