'Tree of life' rooted in Musgrave

EVER took the time to admire the magnificence of the Baobab tree which stands outside of a busy Durban shopping centre?

If not, make your way to Musgrave Centre and take in the splendor of the tree, which is a sacred and protected tree across the African continent. Known as the 'tree of life' due to its succulent qualities, it absorbs and stores water in its vast trunk, enabling it to produce a nutrient-dense fruit. The tree is native to Africa, but can also be found in Madagascar, India, Ceylon, Australia and in parts of Zimbabwe.

Some of these colossal trees can also be found in our city of Durban. Many trees that were planted as saplings in the Durban region have surprisingly lived long and healthy live

The baobab tree located outside Musgrave Centre in Durban's Musgrave area has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. In 1910, David Walsh (1870-1962) planted this baobab on the grounds of his residence, Marston House. The property remained in the Walsh family for several decades. In 1958, Marston House was demolished to make way for the construction of Musgrave Centre, one of Durban's first shopping malls.

Despite the development, the baobab tree was preserved and remained at its original location. In 2011, during an expansion of the mall, plans initially did not accommodate the tree, leading to public outcry. Responding to community concerns, the developers successfully transplanted the baobab to a new position along the Musgrave Road frontage, where it continues to thrive today.
